Frequently Asked Questions

Q:What is Neurofeedback?
A: "Neurofeedback is brain exercise. We observe your brain in action from moment to moment by monitoring your brain waves. We show you your brain activity and we help you change it by rewarding shifts toward a more appropriate and stable brain state. It is a gradual learning process.

Neurofeedback is also called EEG biofeedback. The electroencephalogram (EEG) is another name for the brain wave recordings and, in this context, biofeedback refers to the process by which you learn to change your brain waves and thereby gain better control over your brain staes.
" - as stated in EEGinfo Brochure.

Q:How is Neurofeedback done?
A: "Sensors are attached to the scalp with EEG paste which then pick up brain waves. It is painless and does not involve the application of any voltage or current to the brain, so it is entirely non-invasive.

A computer processes the brain waves and extracts certain information from them. We show you the ebb and flow of your brain waves, and the specific information we obtain from them, in the form of a video game. We instruct you how to play the video game using only your brain waves. (Everyone can do it.) The specific brain wave frequencies we reward and the sensor location on the scalp are unique to each individual.
" - as stated in EEGinfo Brochure.

Q:What diagnosis can this help?
A: This can help any brain dysregulation. (ie. sleep, concentation, organization, anger, depression, anxiety, muscle tension, etc)

"Neurofeddback is training in self-regulation. Good self-regulation is necessary for optimal brain function. Self-regulation training enhances the function of the central nervous system and thereby imroves mental performace, emotional control and physiological stability.

With Neurofeeback we target bioelectrical function of the brain, which is actually a more important issue than the "chemical imbalance" that is often talked about. We are concerned with the brain's internal regulatiory networks, and we train the brain's functional disregulation. Simply by detecting the brain going off track through the EEG, we can train the brain toward enhanced stability and improved fuctioning.

In other respects, Neurofeedback is somewhat like putting the brain on a stair stepper to exercise certain regulatory functions continuously. This is applicable to a wide variety of functional deficits."
- as stated in EEGinfo Brochure

Q:How did NeuroFeedback get started?
A: Back in the 1960's neurofeeback began with studies for seizure disorders. Refer to the book Symphony of the Brain.

Q:If Neurofeedback can do so much, how come I haven't heard about it before?
A: "Neurofeedback is not yet taught in most medical schools or psychology graduate programs. Many professionals are therefor unaware of the power of this technique. The goals at the EEG Institute is to fill that gap by providing professionals with information in Neaurofeedback." -as stated in EEGinfo Brochure

Q:How can I learn more about NeuroFeeback?
A: Suggested reading &

Q:Do I have to take my child off meds first?
A: NO! I don't recommend immediatley going off medications due to side effects, but we can work with the physician to wean off of medications.

Q:Does insurance cover this?
A: I conduct neurofeedback therapy under my OT license, so depending on your insurance & diagnosis it may be covered.

Q:What are the recommended ages for treatment?
A: Treatment can be started effectivley at from the ages of 2 years to 102!!
